international christian conference on prostitution
just an update: we need to register for the conference and buy plane tickets soon. i am also sending out an e-mail reminder. i am setting a deadline of next monday, july 28, for registering with the group of students for housing, and buying plane tickets together. if you're interested, please e-mail me at lacie.morrison@gmail.com. if you decide you want to make arrangements on your own, that's fine too. just be aware that in terms of housing costs, the more people that register together, the more affordable it will be.
here's a link to the conference center, and to the conference info:

The Day My God Died
This movie was produced by Winona Ryder and narrated by Tim Robbins. It's a documentary on the sex trade in India and highlights both victims and rescue attempts as well as after care workers and their stories. Gary Haugen and the work of IJM makes an appearance as well. It's a great overall picture of what is going on from village to brothel.
I was watching it from the perspective of a Faith, Film and Justice candidate and I'm not sure it's global enough, if that makes sense. Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts?

Northwest University Update
Personally, I'm interested in NU's MA in International Care and Community Development and as I've done a little research, I had discovered several classes related to women and children at risk, aftercare, and general social justice issues. I also saw that thru their MACP program they are wanting, willing, and somewhat ready to begin placing students on internships overseas.
So yesterday I meant with a faculty, student, and admissions director to find out the scoop...
They were very positive about collaboration and future conversations about MHGS students benefitting from their field placements. However, they are not providing clinical internships at this time. Their overseas interns do receive front end assistance (location visits from faculty verifying living facilities, hours, job description, etc.) and on going phone supervision, but they do not meet clinical requirements.
Lacie, if you were in need of more ideas and suggestions as you meet with appropriate MHGS folks, I am sure the Northwest guys would be excited to help.
Interestingly, Friday night I am going to attend a class in which we're going to watch a film on sex trafficking in India and on Saturday this same class is having the West Coast IJM director as guest speaker. Apparently, one of the incoming students is already working with the Seattle City Council on the sex trafficking problems here.
So, perhaps we should pull Northwest into the loop as we continue to collaborate with local universities!

First Blog
So this blog is to serve a two fold purpose. For now it's an attempt for those of us active in A.C.T. to communicate and keep each other updated on the information we're gathering and learning about. Post summaries of news reports, books, or movies you've encountered. This summer, as we take a break from meeting, the blog can be a means of exchanging the same information.
Starting in the fall, as ACT becomes an official student group and therefore made known to the greater MHGS community, this blog can be one of the first portals through which interested students encounter these issues and embrace our vision.
Welcome to the official blog of ACT!
